'View of Chatsworth from the South-East' Print
William Cowen (1791-1864), 'View of Chatsworth from the South-East', watercolour on paper, 1828 [WP 1351]
Commissioned by the 6th Duke of Devonshire, this watercolour depicts a view of Chatsworth from the South East. By 1827 the exterior of the 6th Duke’s new north wing at Chatsworth was complete and the following year the Duke engaged Cowen to make several watercolours to record the new building from a variety of viewpoints. This one shows the Duke himself on the east lawn at Chatsworth with his architect Sir Jeffry Wyatville showing him his portfolio of designs which had first been presented for the Duke’s approval in 1818. Inscribed by the artist on the reverse: Chatsworth drawn by Wm. Cowen 1828.
